CMU knocks off Women's Basketball

Women's Basketball ran into a tough opponent at home on Wednesday night.

The Ravens lost to the No. 4 Central Methodist University Eagles, 69-50.

After the Eagles were able to take a double-digit lead after one quarter of play, the Ravens answered.

The Eagles got up by as much as 14 points in the second quarter, 31-17, but the Ravens closed the final four minutes of the half on a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to 7 points. Aaliyah Raines started the run with a bucket, then Josie Weishaar knocked down a 3-pointer. After an Eagles basket, Twilah Carrasquillo and Weishaar each hit two free throws to trim the Eagles lead to 33-26 at halftime.

But the Eagles quickly surged to a double-digit lead in the third quarter, starting off the second half with a 10-0 run to push their lead back to 17 points. The visitors maintained that 17-point advantage heading into the fourth.

The Ravens were unable to climb back in the final 10 minutes, falling by 19 points.

The teams were close in the first few minutes of the game as the Ravens knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, but CMU went on an 11-0 run to take a strong lead, carrying a 22-10 advantage into the second quarter.

Aiding the Eagles were 7 turnovers by the Ravens, which CMU turned into 12 points. The Ravens were also just 3-of-14 from the field in the opening 10 minutes.

The Ravens were able to cut into the CMU lead before half, but the Eagles were too much in the final 20 minutes.

Despite the loss, the Ravens did hold the Eagles to 16 points below their season average.

On the offensive end, the Ravens were led by Rains who had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Weishaar added 8 points and 8 boards, and Carrasquillo and Jennifer Jacobs each had 6 rebounds.

The Ravens (6-8, 3-5 Heart) will remain home to take on the Grand View University Vikings at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7.
