Volleyball falls in five sets to the Spires

The Ravens dropped a tough five-set match at home Wednesday night.

The (RV) Ravens won the first two sets before dropping the final three to lose 3-2 to the University of St. Mary Spires.

The fifth set started in the Ravens favor as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the race to 15, but a 10-2 run put the Spires in control, 11-6. A Ravens timeout didn't slow the visitors down as they won 15-8 to win the match 3-2.

The Ravens fought through a tight first set to emerge with a 25-18 match-opening win. Regan Bruggeman and Winny Harris led the attack with each notching 3 kills, and Evelyn Arreola rattled off 3-straight aces.

The Ravens only led by 2 points, 18-16, before finishing the opening set on a 7-2 run to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Ravens took control early in the second set, taking a 15-8 lead. They pushed that lead to 23-14 before the Spires were able to close the gap a bit, but the Ravens took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 win in the second set.

Arreola added another 3 aces in the second set, while Mahala Sewell had 4 kills.

The third set was a battle to the end, with St. Mary earning a 27-25 win. It looked like the Spires might have an easier victory in the third set, holding set-point at 24-20, but the Ravens scored 4-straight points. The teams traded points until the visitors earned the set win and trimmed the Ravens match lead to 2-1.

The momentum continued in favor of the Spires in the fourth set as they jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead. The Ravens never really found their footing, losing the fourth set 25-13, to set up a decisive fifth set, which St. Mary was able to win.

Arreola finished with 7 aces and 22 digs, and Maura Lickteig had a team-high 10 kills. Bruggeman had 9 kills, Harris finished with 8 kills and Sewell had 7 kills. Haley Cahill led the team with 18 assists and also had 2 aces, and Marissa Mantz had 4 aces.

The Ravens (6-3) will return to action in a week, taking on Kansas Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 at home in Ralph Nolan Gym.
